Strickland Cotton Mill
As of June 2013 the Old Strickland Cotton Mill is in the process of being torn down. There is a small town totally engulfed by Valdosta, GA which is known as Remerton. Within the city of Remerton there is an old cotton mill known as Strickland Cotton Mills. This mill was originally built in 1899 and began processing cotton in 1900. The mill site was located about 2 miles south of downtown Valdosta in case of a boiler explosion. Eventually, Valdosta expanded and totally surrounded the Remerton properties making them landlocked. In 1951, the Strickland mill and village became the incorporated city of Remerton, GA. Eventually, the mill closed in 1979. A few years later, Wipo Industries bought the mill and renamed it Sugar Creek Textile Mill. It was later sold in 1985 to the Wilkinson Textile Company which owned and operated it until November 2005 when it finally closed for good.
